Hazara Cultural Festival Held in Calgary with Alberta Officials in Attendance

A group of Afghan cultural figures and residents living in Canada organized a cultural event in Calgary to celebrate Hazara Cultural Day and Eid al-Adha. The program was attended by several Alberta officials and immigrant support organizations.

The event took place on Sunday, June 10, with the participation of Muhammad Yasin, Alberta’s Minister of Culture; Trina Rahimi, representative of the Newcomers Support Center; and a representative from the Immigrant Services Center of Canada. In addition to them, community elders, families, youth, artists, athletes, businesspeople, volunteers, and official guests were also present at the gathering.

The program included speeches, cultural and artistic performances, music, special activities for children, and recognition of students and athletes. Speakers emphasized the importance of preserving Hazara culture, strengthening social cohesion, and the role of the younger generation in continuing cultural identity.

They also noted that Hazara Cultural Day is celebrated worldwide in 2026 in various cities including Vienna, Strasbourg, Sydney, and Calgary. Organizers announced plans to establish a permanent center for the Hazara community in Calgary and Alberta, which will serve as a cultural, educational, artistic, and social space for members of the community.

Hazara Cultural Day is held annually both inside and outside Afghanistan as a cultural occasion aimed at introducing and preserving the values and cultural identity of the Hazara community.
