Taliban Official Says Agreement with Russia Not Directed Against Any Country

The Taliban’s Defense Minister announced that the recent agreement with Russia was signed to enhance Afghanistan’s security and defense, and is not targeted against any other country. Mohammad Yaqoub Mujahid stated that the memorandum of understanding is not confrontational and is formulated within Afghanistan’s interests.
He added that the Taliban administration is ready to enter talks with other countries interested in signing similar agreements. According to him, if countries are willing, there is scope for consultations and cooperation in security and defense.
Mujahid also described concerns raised about this agreement as “baseless.” However, the precise details of the agreement’s provisions and the commitments of both parties have not yet been made transparently available to the public; a matter that has consistently led to questions and ambiguities regarding the Taliban administration’s foreign agreements.
Russia is among the countries that have maintained working relations with the Taliban administration following political developments in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, the lack of transparency about the framework of security cooperation may influence regional perceptions and the concerns of some countries.
