Taliban’s Mujahid Says New Deal with Russia Is Not Against Any Country

The Taliban’s acting defense minister announced that the recent agreement with Russia was signed to enhance Afghanistan’s security and defense and is not targeted against any other country. Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid stated that the memorandum of understanding does not have a confrontational nature and is framed within Afghanistan’s interests.
He added that the Taliban administration is ready to engage in similar agreements with other countries interested in signing such deals. According to him, if countries are willing, there is room for consultations and security and defense cooperation.
Mujahid also described the concerns raised about this agreement as “baseless.” However, the exact details of the agreement’s provisions and the commitments of both parties have not yet been transparently disclosed to the public; an issue that has consistently accompanied foreign agreements made by the Taliban administration with questions and ambiguities.
Russia is among the countries that have maintained working relations with the Taliban administration following Afghanistan’s political developments. Nonetheless, the lack of transparency regarding the framework of security cooperation may influence regional perceptions and the concerns of some countries.
