Livestock Prices Rise Ahead of Eid al-Adha in Afghanistan

As Eid al-Adha approaches, live livestock markets in several provinces of Afghanistan have seen increased foot traffic. However, many residents are complaining about the rising prices of sacrificial animals.

According to religious tradition, Muslims sacrifice sheep, goats, cows, or camels during Eid al-Adha. Afghan citizens also hold this ceremony annually, but some buyers say the cost of livestock has increased compared to previous years, reducing families’ purchasing power.

Some residents say that growing poverty and unemployment have made it difficult for many families to afford sacrificial animals this year. They describe the economic situation as challenging and stress that if this trend continues, organizing Eid ceremonies will become difficult for a large segment of the population.

Economic experts have previously warned that the labor market stagnation and economic restrictions under the Taliban administration have put additional pressure on people’s livelihoods. Nevertheless, livestock markets remain crowded in the days leading up to Eid, with buyers striving to fulfill this religious obligation.
