Iran Offers to Mediate Between Pakistan and Taliban Amid Regional Tensions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced Tehran’s willingness to mediate between Pakistan and the Taliban in a bid to reduce tensions and resolve disputes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The announcement came during a meeting with Pakistan’s Interior Minister, held on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) interior ministers’ summit in Tehran.

Pezeshkian described Iran-Pakistan relations as based on mutual trust and brotherhood, stressing the need to expand cooperation in scientific, cultural, economic, security, and political fields. He added that such a relationship could serve as a model for other countries in the region.

Highlighting the historical and religious ties between the Iranian and Pakistani people, Pezeshkian expressed hope that the ECO summit would accelerate the implementation of previous agreements between the two countries. He emphasized that Muslim nations should stand united against common enemies and avoid conflict and tension in the region.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi underscored the importance of bilateral relations, noting that his frequent visits to Iran reflect the depth of those ties. He identified border cooperation, joint counterterrorism efforts, and the issue of illegal immigrants as key areas of collaboration.

Naqvi said Islamabad is in dialogue with the Taliban administration to resolve tensions peacefully and praised Iran’s role in reducing tensions and maintaining regional stability. He called for continued close cooperation with Tehran on these issues.

The talks on easing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan come amid concerns that the Taliban administration has yet to respond transparently or effectively to the security concerns of neighboring countries, including Pakistan. Border insecurity and Taliban immigration policies have raised serious concerns among regional nations.
