Afghan Embassy in Tehran Discusses New Round of Prisoner Transfers from Iran

The Afghan Embassy in Tehran announced that Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, the acting head of the embassy appointed by the Taliban administration, met with Askar Jalalian, Deputy for Human Rights and International Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Justice. The main focus of the meeting was to discuss the initiation of a new round of transferring Afghan prisoners from Iran to Afghanistan.
According to the released statement, both sides also emphasized expanding legal and judicial cooperation between Kabul and Tehran. The discussion included the implementation procedures for the transfer process and subsequent coordination.
The transfer of Afghan prisoners from Iran has resurfaced amid ongoing calls from the prisoners’ families for greater transparency about their legal status and conditions after returning to Afghanistan. Given the lack of a transparent and accountable judicial system under Taliban rule, concerns remain regarding the handling of the cases of the transferred prisoners.
Iran hosts a significant number of Afghan migrants and prisoners, and the prisoner transfer process between the two countries has previously taken place within the framework of legal agreements.
