Taliban Leader’s Call for Unconditional Obedience Sparks Unprecedented Internal Criticism

Following a recent speech by Hibatullah Akhundzada, leader of the Taliban administration, in which he demanded “unconditional obedience” to himself, some members of the group have voiced unprecedented criticism. Critics say these remarks reflect an approach that elevates his position beyond that of a mere political leader.

In his speech, Akhundzada stated, “If you do not consider me dearer than your own lives and do not follow me, you are sinners.” These words have drawn negative reactions from several Taliban members. They told media outlets that this rhetoric suggests he “has placed himself in the position of a prophet,” a view that has sparked widespread religious and social sensitivities.

So far, only Sirajuddin Haqqani, acting Minister of Interior of the Taliban administration, and Abdul Ghani Baradar, former Deputy Foreign Minister, have publicly criticized Mullah Hibatullah. Other Taliban figures have remained silent on these statements.

While the Taliban administration has consistently emphasized internal unity, the emergence of such public disagreements may indicate intellectual divisions within the group. Critics believe that the concentration of power and calls for absolute obedience limit the scope for accountability and internal criticism—a topic that political observers have previously highlighted.
