German Chancellor Scholz Voices Early Doubts on Iran War Amid Berlin-Washington Tensions

Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, announced amid heightened tensions between Berlin and Washington that he had harbored doubts about the Iran war from the very beginning and now stresses the necessity of ending the conflict. He warned that continuing tensions, especially the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, could have serious consequences for Europe’s energy supply and economy.

According to Anadolu Agency, Merz responded to reporters on Wednesday regarding his critical stance on the war and comments by US President Donald Trump, stating that his personal relationship with the US president “remains unchanged and good.”

The German Chancellor added that he had publicly expressed concerns from the outset about the course initiated by the Iran war. He said Germany and other European countries will be directly affected by the potential consequences of this conflict, including disruptions in energy transit routes.

Merz further emphasized that a prolonged conflict between the US and Israel with Iran directly impacts energy security and Germany’s economic performance. He stated that Berlin insists on a political resolution to the crisis and that constructive talks with involved parties continue.

These remarks come as Merz’s current position against participating in military action against Iran marks a change compared to his earlier views on Tehran.
