UNAMA Condemns Pakistan’s Attacks on Kunar, Urges Protection of Civilians and Educational Facilities

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has responded to recent Pakistani attacks on Kunar province by stating that under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially educational centers, must be protected under all circumstances.

According to reports, Pakistani military forces targeted parts of Kunar’s provincial center as well as areas in the districts of Marwara, Dangam, and Shultan on Monday afternoon. Among the targets was Syed Jamaluddin Afghan University.

It is reported that as a result of these attacks, seven civilians have been killed and 75 others injured. Among the wounded are women, children, and 30 students, raising serious concerns about the safety of educational institutions.

On Tuesday, UNAMA issued a statement emphasizing that, according to globally accepted norms, all parties are obliged to prevent harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure, particularly educational institutions. The mission added that dozens of Afghan civilians have been killed or injured as a result of these attacks.

UNAMA also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
