Armed Guards Carrying US-Made Weapons Spark Debate Around Taliban Official’s Security Detail

Maulvi Din Mohammad, head of the Taliban’s Council of Scholars in Kabul, was seen surrounded by a ring of armed guards during a speech at a mosque. These guards were carrying weapons manufactured in the United States, remnants from the previous Afghan government’s era.
The Taliban administration has consistently claimed that nationwide security in Afghanistan has been secured. However, the presence of special guards alongside one of the group’s senior officials indicates that security concerns persist and that officials are protected with specific measures.
The image of the head of the Kabul Council of Scholars circulating on social media sparked reactions. Several users questioned the Taliban administration’s claim of complete security based on this photograph.
The ISIS Khorasan branch has previously targeted multiple senior Taliban officials. Among these figures are Khalil-ur-Rahman Haqqani, the former Taliban Minister of Refugees, and the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, leader of the Haqqani Network—events that underline the ongoing security threats facing the group’s leaders.
