Over 4,200 Afghan Migrants Return in a Single Day Amid Growing Concerns

Media outlets operated under the Taliban report that 4,221 Afghan migrants returned to the country within one day. Bakhtar News Agency announced on Monday, 7th of Sowr, that these individuals arrived in Afghanistan as part of more than 800 families.

Meanwhile, the United Nations states that only 11 percent of returnees are employed; a statistic that raises concerns about their livelihood conditions and the country’s capacity to absorb them. Many of these families are returning amidst a labor market facing recession and widespread restrictions.

Two days earlier, around one thousand families had also returned to Afghanistan, indicating that the wave of migrant returns is ongoing.

According to UN figures, approximately 2.8 million Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan in 2025. The UN’s Human Settlements Programme noted that nearly three million returnees last year have led to an approximate 10 percent increase in Afghanistan’s population.

Despite these figures, the Taliban administration has yet to provide clear details about practical plans for sustainable settlement, job creation, and provision of essential services for the returnees—a matter that humanitarian organizations see as requiring immediate attention and effective management.
