EU Prioritizes Reopening of Strait of Hormuz for Stability in Middle East

The President of the European Council stated that peace and stability in the Middle East are top priorities for the European Union, emphasizing that the full and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains at the forefront of the EU’s agenda. António Costa raised this issue following a phone conversation with Abdullah II, King of Jordan.
On Monday, Costa wrote on his official social media page on X that the European Union works closely with key regional partners, including Jordan. According to him, Brussels supports all ongoing diplomatic efforts amid the complex challenges facing the region.
The President of the European Council also referred to the situation in Lebanon, saying the EU remains concerned about developments in the country and continues to work towards restoring stability. He added that the union is prepared to support Lebanon through humanitarian aid and reconstruction programs.
Costa identified the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as priorities for the European Union. EU leaders are expected to exchange views on developments in the Middle East with their partners during an informal meeting later this week in Cyprus.
The Strait of Hormuz, as one of the world’s critical maritime passages, plays a central role in energy transit and international trade. Any restrictions there could have wide-ranging economic and security consequences both regionally and globally.
