US Pentagon to Release Final Report on Afghanistan Withdrawal Soon

The United States Department of Defense has announced that the final report on how American forces withdrew from Afghanistan will be completed and published in the coming months. This review was conducted by a special panel within the Pentagon, focusing on evaluating the decisions and events related to the August 2021 withdrawal.
The American newspaper Stars and Stripes, citing Pentagon officials, reported that the “Special Review Panel on the Afghanistan Withdrawal” has nearly completed its investigations. The panel was established last year by then-Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to conduct a comprehensive review of the planning and execution of the US troop withdrawal.
According to provided information, panel members have examined over nine million documents from various agencies and have conducted interviews with senior military and civilian officials. A Pentagon spokesperson stated that the final report will include findings and recommendations aimed at preventing the repetition of “past mistakes.”
The withdrawal took place amid chaos, including a suicide bombing at Kabul airport that killed 13 American soldiers. This event occurred during the evacuation of thousands of foreign and Afghan civilians, a situation marked by the Taliban’s return to power and the collapse of the previous security and administrative structures in the country.
Meanwhile, US officials have emphasized that the 2020 agreement between the United States and the Taliban, signed during Donald Trump’s presidency, had a direct impact on the decision-making process and the timeline of the withdrawal. This agreement paved the way for the withdrawal of foreign forces and ultimately the Taliban’s reassertion of control over Afghanistan, an outcome whose political, security, and humanitarian repercussions continue to be discussed and assessed.
