Nigeria and Turkey Finalize Extensive Military Cooperation Agreement

Nigeria’s Defense Minister announced that the country has finalized a comprehensive military cooperation agreement with Turkey. Under this pact, both nations will collaborate on the joint production of defense equipment, technology transfer, and special forces training.

Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Defense Minister, said during his visit to Antalya that the two countries have reached an understanding on the joint production of military components and the enhancement of defense industries. He added that this cooperation could accelerate the modernization of Nigeria’s army.

According to him, 200 elite Nigerian army personnel will be sent to Turkey to undergo specialized training courses. These training programs are part of efforts to strengthen the operational capacities of the country’s security forces.

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, has faced nearly two decades of armed insurgencies and widespread insecurity. The country continues to struggle with threats posed by Boko Haram, the West African branch of ISIS, as well as criminal gangs operating in its northwest region.

This military cooperation followed Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Turkey in January, marking a fresh chapter in diplomatic and defense relations between Abuja and Ankara after a nine-year hiatus. Nigerian officials are also seeking to diversify their security partners by expanding ties with Turkey and reducing their traditional dependence on the United States.
