UN and CSTO Warn of Security Implications Amid Developments in Afghanistan

Officials from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the United Nations met in Moscow to discuss the ‘Afghanistan factor’ as a key element of stability and security in Central Asia. They emphasized the importance of continued monitoring and preventive measures in response to developments in Afghanistan.
At the meeting, Samat Ordabaev, Deputy Secretary General of the CSTO, and Kaha Imanadze, the UN’s Special Representative and Head of the Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, talked about the changing security situation in the region. A significant part of the discussions focused on the consequences related to the situation in Afghanistan.
According to the CSTO statement, both parties stressed the necessity of sustained surveillance of the situation in Afghanistan and the adoption of preventive measures to contain potential threats. They also agreed on closer coordination with UN agencies to strengthen regional responses against emerging threats.
The CSTO’s statement said, “Continuous monitoring of the Afghanistan factor’s impact on regional peace and security, along with preventive actions to address emerging threats, remains a fundamental priority.”
These remarks come as the Taliban administration has repeatedly stated it will not allow Afghanistan’s territory to be used against other countries and that border security is under control. Nevertheless, the repeated emphasis on the ‘Afghanistan factor’ at regional meetings indicates ongoing concerns about the security situation and how to manage threats.
Some analysts believe that the frequent raising of this issue in regional forums reflects not only security considerations but also signals broader political movements regarding engagement with Kabul.
Meanwhile, Talatbek Masadikov, Secretary General of the CSTO, announced plans to hold a broader security meeting later this year, involving Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. Representatives from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Commonwealth of Independent States are also expected to participate in this meeting.
