Trump Criticizes Spain Over NATO Contributions and Economic Situation

Donald Trump, President of the United States, responded to recent positions taken by the Spanish government by accusing Madrid of underperforming in its NATO commitments and describing the country’s economic situation as “worrying.” In a message posted on the social media platform Truth Social, he stated that despite Spain’s small share in defense spending, it faces serious financial problems.
Trump asked, “Has anyone looked at the bad situation in Spain?” He claimed the country’s financial statistics are “completely terrible” and added that Madrid contributes almost nothing to NATO and its own military defense.
These remarks come amid economic experts pointing to official growth figures. According to them, Spain’s economy is projected to grow by 2.8% in 2025, surpassing the United States’ 2.1% growth rate for the second consecutive year.
The verbal tension between the two sides intensified after the government of Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, opposed the U.S. and Israel’s military actions against Iran. Sánchez has repeatedly called the war “illegal,” a stance that triggered a strong response from White House officials.
As a NATO member, Spain in recent years has had disputes with other allies over the share of defense costs among member countries, an issue frequently highlighted by Washington.
