Taliban Administration Reports Completion of Restoration on 23 Historical Sites

On April 18, World Cultural Heritage Day, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture announced the administration’s commitment to the restoration and repair of historical sites across the country. He stated that over the past year, the restoration work on 23 historical buildings in several provinces has been completed.

According to Habib Ghafoor, these projects were implemented in the provinces of Kandahar, Bamyan, Laghman, Paktika, Kabul, and Helmand. He did not provide further details regarding the nature of the buildings or the costs involved.

The ministry spokesperson also urged citizens to cooperate with the institution in protecting cultural heritage. Afghanistan, with its several-thousand-year history, possesses numerous historical sites and settlements that have been damaged during years of war and instability.

However, cultural experts have consistently emphasized that effective protection of historical heritage requires transparent planning, sufficient resources, and broad participation of the public and specialized institutions—a matter on which the Taliban administration is expected to be held accountable in practice.
