UNAMA Meets with Taliban Deputy Governor in Nangarhar to Discuss Returnees and Displaced Families

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has announced that Georgette Gagnon, the acting head of the mission, met today (Sunday) with Ghulam Rahman Haidari, the Taliban-appointed Deputy Governor of Nangarhar. They discussed the situation of returnees, internally displaced families, and those affected by natural disasters.
During the meeting, both sides focused on the immediate challenges and needs of returnees and internally displaced families. Topics raised included providing shelter, facilitating access to new settlements, and addressing livelihood difficulties.
Additionally, issues related to trade, transit, development projects, and certain political and diplomatic matters were part of the dialogue agenda. Nangarhar is among the provinces that have witnessed a significant influx of returning Afghans and displacement of families due to insecurity and natural events in recent years.
This meeting comes amid ongoing complaints from many returnees and displaced persons regarding the lack of basic services and insufficient infrastructure. Given the Taliban administration’s responsibility for managing the areas and providing public services, it is expected that they will undertake more practical and transparent measures in coordination with international organizations to improve the situation of these families.
