IMF Board Reviews Economic Situation in Afghanistan and Five Other Countries

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that its Executive Board held an informal meeting to receive reports on the economic situation in Afghanistan along with five other countries. The meeting also included assessments of the economies of Iran, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia.

According to a statement released on Thursday, 20 Hamal, the meeting was part of the IMF’s routine process for countries whose Article IV consultations have been delayed. Article IV consultations are a supervisory mechanism whereby the IMF periodically evaluates the economic condition of member countries.

During this session, IMF staff updated the Executive Board on the latest economic developments in these countries. The IMF noted that such meetings generally take place when a country’s Article IV consultations have been postponed for more than 18 months.

The IMF further added that the Executive Board regularly, approximately every 12 months, receives reports based on publicly available information regarding the economic status of these nations.
