148 Dead and Over 200 Injured in Two Weeks of Natural Disasters in Afghanistan

The National Disaster Management Authority under the Taliban administration has reported that in the past two weeks, 148 people have died and 216 others have been injured in Afghanistan due to natural events. According to the authority, heavy rains, floods, roof collapses, earthquakes, and lightning strikes have been the main causes of these casualties.

The authority reported on Wednesday, April 7, that most provinces of the country have experienced heavy rainfall and flooding during this period. In the past two days alone, Nangarhar province recorded 24 deaths and about 33 injuries, making it the province with the highest recent casualties.

According to the information provided, a total of 1,149 houses have been completely or partially destroyed, and parts of agricultural lands and roads have also been damaged. Additionally, around 7,500 families have been affected by these events and are facing serious challenges regarding shelter and livelihoods.

Afghanistan is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to natural disasters. In 2025, earthquakes, floods, and droughts destroyed about 8,000 homes. Despite the recurrence of such events, the lack of effective preventive programs, weak crisis management, and insufficient disaster-resilient infrastructure remain serious challenges in reducing casualties and damages. This is an issue for which the Taliban administration is expected to be held accountable and to implement more practical measures.
