Amnesty International Warns Trump’s Threats Against Iran’s Energy Infrastructure May Constitute War Crimes

Amnesty International’s Secretary-General has stated that US President Donald Trump’s threats to target Iran’s energy infrastructure could be considered a war crime. She emphasized that such actions would have direct and widespread consequences on civilians.
On Monday, Agnes Callamard said that the threat to attack energy facilities and critical infrastructure, including bridges, means that civilian populations would bear the brunt of the damage. According to her, destroying these facilities could deprive people of electricity, heating, and water, while blocking escape routes and access to essential services.
The Amnesty International Secretary-General warned that such threats could lead to a wave of serious violations of international humanitarian law. She underscored the necessity of adhering to international law principles and protecting civilians in any military tensions.
These remarks come after Donald Trump recently announced that he would target Iran’s energy infrastructure if tensions escalate. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy transit route in the region, has been at the center of political and military tensions in recent years.
