Over 31,000 Affected by 2025 Flash Floods in Afghanistan, UN Warns

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has reported that in 2025, more than 31,000 people in Afghanistan were affected by sudden flash floods. These events annually cause widespread damage to residents in vulnerable areas.

On Sunday, April 4th, UN-Habitat released a statement emphasizing the necessity of building disaster-resilient infrastructure. The agency stressed that investing in preventative projects can reduce community vulnerability.

According to the statement, UN-Habitat, in cooperation with the Afghanistan Trust Fund, is working to enhance local capacities and implement protective plans to increase communities’ resilience against natural disasters.

This comes as flash floods in early 2026 have also caused significant damage in several provinces. Experts have repeatedly emphasized that effective natural disaster risk management and standard urban planning require serious coordination among responsible bodies, including the Taliban administration, and specialized international organizations to prevent such recurring losses.
