Afghan Citizen Arrested in Kolkata for Five Years of Illegal Stay and Using Fake Documents

Kolkata police in India announced the arrest of an Afghan citizen named Jamil Khan on charges of illegal residency for five years and the use of fake documents in the city. According to security officials, he was identified and detained in the Behaniapur area in southern Kolkata.

Indian media reported that Jamil Khan entered India in February 2021 on a three-month tourist visa; however, after the visa expired in May of the same year, he remained in the country without legal renewal.

According to these reports, during his illegal stay, he used forged Indian documents to obtain a local identity card and a fake driving license, and he also established a business.

Indian security officials stated that his violations were revealed following an investigation of passport and visa documents by the intelligence division of Kolkata police. They said that the accused admitted during interrogation to staying illegally for five years, and his case was registered with the Behaniapur police precinct.

Kolkata police also announced that investigations are ongoing to identify any potential activities of other foreign nationals using fake document networks in the city.
