Taliban’s Amir Khan Muttaqi Describes Urumqi Talks with Pakistan as ‘Positive’

Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, in a meeting with Sadin Aildiz, Turkey’s ambassador to Kabul, stated that the recent talks with Pakistan in the Chinese city of Urumqi were “positive” and minor issues should not hinder the continuation of this process. These negotiations, mediated by China, took place last week but ended without any tangible achievements.

The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday, April 12, saying that during this meeting, both sides exchanged views on recent regional developments and the Urumqi negotiation process. According to Muttaqi, the talks have progressed “well” so far.

However, no details have been released regarding specific progress or practical agreements between the two parties, and uncertainty about the outcomes of this meeting remains. This comes amid ongoing border and political tensions between Kabul and Islamabad in recent months, with citizens on both sides of the border awaiting concrete results from these consultations.

According to the statement, the Turkish ambassador also expressed that his country seeks positive relations with both the Taliban administration and Pakistan. In recent years, Turkey has tried to play a more active role in regional developments and maintain relations with the involved parties through diplomatic engagement.

Despite the Taliban describing the talks as “positive,” the repeated conclusion of these sessions without concrete results has raised questions about the effectiveness and transparency of the negotiation process—a matter that requires clearer explanations from responsible officials.
