Kabul Municipality Plans Five Covered Markets for Street Vendors

The spokesperson for Kabul Municipality has announced that following the issuance of a decree regulating street vendors’ activities, the responsibility for managing and organizing this sector has been assigned to the municipality. In this framework, the creation of five covered markets is currently underway.
Nematullah Barkazy stated that the purpose of building these markets is to establish urban order and provide a suitable environment for street vendors to carry out their work. He added that the design phase of these projects is nearly complete, and the next stages are under review.
According to the provided information, these covered markets will be constructed in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and eleventh districts of Kabul city.
However, no details have yet been released regarding the timeline for the commencement of work, the allocated budget, or the processes for relocating street vendors to these sites. In recent years, many street vendors have complained about arbitrary treatment and the lack of a clear plan from the Taliban administration concerning the regulation of their activities. This issue highlights the need for transparency and guarantees for the labor rights of this vulnerable urban group.
