UN-Habitat and Japan Support Reconstruction of Afghanistan’s Urban Infrastructure

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has announced that, with financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japanese Embassy in Afghanistan, efforts to rebuild vital infrastructure in several urban and peri-urban areas of the country are underway. According to UN-Habitat, decades of war, natural disasters, and underinvestment in basic infrastructure have left many residents, especially in cities and their surrounding areas, vulnerable. The lack of essential urban services is among the challenges directly impacting people’s quality of life. UN-Habitat states that the ongoing projects focus on repairing and restoring crucial urban facilities, aiming to improve daily living conditions and strengthen the resilience of local communities. The agency also emphasized that sustained international cooperation in infrastructure development can play a key role in reducing citizens’ vulnerabilities and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth in Afghanistan’s cities.
