Widespread Rainfall in Afghanistan: Boost for Agriculture but Raises Flood Risks

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that from April 6 to 12, widespread rainfall will continue across most areas of Afghanistan, with heavier precipitation expected in the central, eastern, and southeastern regions.
According to the FAO, the increased soil moisture resulting from these rains will create more favorable conditions for rain-fed crops and pastures, strengthening the spring agricultural season. This development could represent an important opportunity for farmers, especially in rain-dependent areas.
However, the FAO has warned that heavy rains increase the risk of flooding in urban and rural areas. Such events could damage agricultural lands, infrastructure, and the livelihoods of vulnerable families in these communities.
Afghanistan is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, and in recent years, severe weather events, including seasonal floods, have caused significant damage to residents. Experts emphasize the need for better water resource management and preparedness for natural disasters.
