UNDP and Japan Rebuild 1.3 km Irrigation Canal, Expanding Crop Cultivation on 1,280 Hectares in Afghanistan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan has announced that, as part of the “PALPA” project and with financial support from the Government of Japan, 1.3 kilometers of irrigation canal have been rebuilt, enabling irrigation for 1,280 hectares of agricultural land.

According to the agency, this initiative helps farmers to adopt new crops and increase their income through better access to water, markets, and trade partnerships.

Project officials say that improving irrigation systems is a fundamental need for farmers in many regions of Afghanistan, as water shortages and lack of standard infrastructure have consistently affected agricultural production levels.

The PALPA project, focusing on strengthening rural livelihoods, seeks to build economic sustainability in agricultural communities by creating stronger linkages between producers and markets.
