Trump Claims New Iranian President Requested Ceasefire, Conditions It on Strait of Hormuz Access

Donald Trump, President of the United States, has once again claimed that Iran’s new president has asked the United States for a ceasefire. In a message posted on the social media platform Truth Social, he described the inexperienced Iranian leader as “less radical and smarter than his predecessors” and asserted that Washington will consider the request only if the Strait of Hormuz remains open.

Without providing further details, Trump emphasized that the ceasefire issue is conditional on the status of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s energy supplies passes. Iranian officials have not responded to this claim as of the time of this report.

These remarks come amid previous allegations by the U.S. president regarding contacts or negotiations with Iranian officials. By contrast, Islamic Republic authorities have repeatedly denied any direct negotiations under pressure.

Iranian media had earlier reported that following military attacks on 28 February 2026 (9th of Hoot, 1404 in the Persian calendar), Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, several senior military officials, and a number of civilians were killed. Reports also indicated that over 170 students died in a bombing of a school in Minab.

According to Iranian officials, Tehran has labeled these attacks an invasion of its territory and declared that it has targeted certain sites associated with Israel and U.S. bases in the region as part of “legitimate defense,” while imposing restrictions on the passage of certain vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent developments have escalated tensions in the region to a new level, raising concerns about the spread of conflict and its impact on regional security and the global energy markets.
