UN-Habitat Warns of Afghanistan’s Vulnerability to Natural Disasters

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has announced that Afghanistan, due to its geographical location and climatic conditions, is exposed to various natural hazards including floods, droughts, and earthquakes, necessitating serious measures to reduce the impacts.
The organization stated that, in collaboration with local communities across different regions of the country, it strives to lower risks, strengthen residents’ resilience, and enhance preparedness for potential future events. The focus of these programs is on raising awareness, improving local infrastructure, and supporting community-based projects.
In recent years, Afghanistan has repeatedly experienced devastating natural events that have caused extensive human and financial losses. Experts believe that mitigating natural disaster risks requires long-term planning, effective resource management, and close coordination among responsible agencies and the international community.
Meanwhile, some observers emphasize that the Taliban administration also bears responsibility to establish organized crisis management structures and invest in resilient infrastructure to prevent recurring widespread damage; as long-term vulnerability could pose serious challenges to the country’s development and social stability.
