Shahid Mazari Youth Futsal Team Suspends Activities After Taliban Pressure to Remove Name

The “Shahid Mazari Youth” futsal team has announced it will withdraw from the four-team futsal tournament in Mazar-i-Sharif, Balkh province’s capital, and suspend its activities indefinitely following pressure from Taliban sports officials to remove “Shahid Mazari” from the team’s name.

In a statement, the team said that officials had requested they change the team’s name, a demand the members found unacceptable. The statement emphasized that the name “Shahid Mazari” is not merely a sports title but reflects the team’s identity and beliefs.

The team further explained that due to unfair reports and what they described as “ignoring the team’s voice,” the organization of the tournament itself faced challenges. They added that these obstacles prevented even a simple sports competition from taking place in Mazar-i-Sharif.

This incident comes amidst increased restrictions and sensitivities by the Taliban administration in recent years regarding names and symbols associated with former political and jihadi figures, impacting cultural and sports activities. Critics argue that interference in sports team naming limits the sports environment, which should remain free from political tensions.

The Shahid Mazari Youth futsal team includes several well-known players and national futsal representatives of Afghanistan, such as Omid Qanbari, Abbas Haidari, and Morteza Hosseini.
