Gas Pipeline Explosion in Pakistan’s Balochistan Cuts Supply to Multiple Areas

Pakistani officials announced that in the early hours of Monday, March 29, a major natural gas pipeline exploded on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province. As a result, gas supply has been cut off in parts of the city and at least five other districts.
A spokesperson for the Southern Gas Company stated that the 18-inch diameter pipeline was targeted in the explosion, causing gas delivery to several regions to halt. According to the spokesperson, technical teams from the company are present at the site and have begun repairing the damaged pipeline, but the exact time for restoring the gas supply remains undetermined.
So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Balochistan, which shares borders with Afghanistan and Iran, has frequently experienced attacks on its energy infrastructure over recent years. In addition to activities by Baloch separatist groups, the province has also faced threats from Islamist militants, raising ongoing concerns about the security of vital installations.
Baloch separatists have previously claimed that the province’s residents do not receive a fair share of the benefits from natural resources, a key factor behind the region’s persistent tensions.
