Taliban Commission: Afghan Migrants’ Situation in Iran Is Being Closely Monitored

The Taliban’s commission responsible for addressing migrants’ issues says it is closely monitoring the situation of Afghan migrants residing in Iran. Diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashhad, in coordination with the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are actively providing services to these migrants.

Ahmadullah Wasiq, spokesperson for the commission, stated that the Afghan embassy and consulates in Iran maintain constant communication with host country officials to address ongoing challenges. He added that discussions to find potential solutions are continuing.

These remarks come amid earlier Iranian media reports indicating that six members of an Afghan family were killed following joint U.S. and Israeli missile strikes in Rey city, southern Tehran. No additional official details about this incident have been released so far.

The commission’s spokesperson further emphasized that conditions for the return of migrants to Afghanistan are being prepared and efforts to better assist returnees are ongoing. However, questions remain regarding the provision of basic living necessities, employment, and shelter for those returning—a concern consistently raised by migrant rights organizations.

Previously, a spokesperson for the Afghan Ministry of Migrants and Returnees announced that contacts had been established with relevant Iranian authorities to ensure the safety of Afghan migrants in Iran.

Meanwhile, Ali Reza Karimi, a migrant rights activist, stressed that the Taliban administration must undertake more practical efforts to provide services to returnees and ensure safe migration processes. He warned that without creating genuine opportunities for resuming life inside Afghanistan, migration flows are likely to continue.

According to official statistics, nearly three million Afghan citizens live in Iran. Any security or political developments in Afghanistan could directly affect their situation, underscoring the need for responsible and accountable management by the Taliban administration.
