Flood Warning Issued for 14 Provinces in Afghanistan; 17 Dead in Two Days

The Taliban’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Meteorology Department has announced that tomorrow, Tuesday (1st of Hamal), 14 provinces across the country will experience rainfall and a risk of flash floods. According to the department, rain and flood-related incidents in the past two days have claimed at least 17 lives and injured 26 others.

The warning covers the provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Paktia, Khost, Paktika, Ghazni, Zabul, Ghor, Herat, Badghis, Sar-e Pol, and Faryab. Rainfall amounts in various areas of these provinces are forecasted to range between 10 to 20 millimeters.

Additionally, relatively strong winds with speeds of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected in the western and southern provinces. Such wind speeds may cause damage to light infrastructure and agricultural lands.

In recent days, several provinces have witnessed continuous rainfall and flooding events, which annually result in both human casualties and property damage. Despite the recurrence of these incidents, questions remain regarding the preparedness of responsible agencies for crisis management and prompt assistance to those affected.

Due to its geographical location and the mountainous terrain covering much of the country, Afghanistan remains vulnerable to seasonal floods, underscoring the increasing need for preventive planning and focused attention on high-risk areas.
