Iran Damages US E-3 Sentry AWACS Aircraft in Missile Attack on Saudi Base

Bloomberg has reported that following an Iranian missile strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, a US E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft was damaged. According to the report, this marks the first time this costly surveillance aircraft has suffered combat damage amid recent tensions.

The attack not only hit the AWACS plane but also inflicted damage on several fighter jets stationed at the base. US officials have yet to release further details regarding the extent of the damages.

The Boeing E-3 Sentry targeted in this incident is among the most strategic assets of the US Air Force and its allies. It was stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base, which has played a key role in regional operations in recent years.

The E-3 AWACS is not merely an airborne early warning system; it functions as an airborne command and control center. By creating an integrated battlefield picture, it guides fighters toward targets, allocates targets, and manages interception during operations.

Published information indicates the aircraft can simultaneously track over 300 targets. Each unit’s estimated value in 2026 ranges between $530 million and $600 million.
