One-Third of Afghanistan’s Population Lacks Access to Safe Drinking Water, UNICEF Warns

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that nearly one-third of Afghanistan’s population still lacks access to safe and adequate drinking water, posing a serious health risk to millions of children.

According to UNICEF, the agency was able to provide access to safe water for 2.1 million people in Afghanistan during 2025. However, the organization emphasized that this effort falls short of meeting the widespread existing needs, and further actions are urgently required to ensure safe water for all children across the country.

The shortage of safe drinking water remains a significant challenge in many urban and rural areas of Afghanistan. The lack of adequate water infrastructure, consecutive droughts, and widespread poverty are among the key factors limiting access to clean water.

Currently, the responsibility to address this critical need lies with the Taliban administration. Nevertheless, citizens in several provinces have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of basic services. Effective and transparent programs for managing water resources and expanding water supply networks are expected to be implemented. Ensuring access to safe water is not only a vital necessity but also a fundamental right for every child in Afghanistan.
