Afghan Embassy in Berlin Remains Under Former Ambassador’s Oversight, Germany Confirms

A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry has stated that the Afghan Embassy in Berlin continues to operate under the management of the former ambassador, who is recognized by Germany. So far, no official notification has been received regarding any change in the diplomatic staff of this mission.

Martin Giese emphasized that the appointment of any new ambassador requires formal procedures and the ‘consent of the host country’; a process that must be coordinated between the two nations. He added that no request or approval has been made regarding the nomination of a new representative for the Afghan Embassy in Berlin.

These remarks come amid earlier reports suggesting that a diplomat affiliated with the Taliban administration has assumed responsibility for the Afghan Embassy in Germany. However, German officials have not officially confirmed this.

The Taliban administration has yet to respond to these reports or to the German Foreign Ministry’s statements. Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, the diplomatic legitimacy and recognition of their representatives in various countries have continued to face legal and political challenges.
