German Media Reports Taliban-Appointed Diplomat Assigned to Afghan Embassy in Berlin Without German Government’s Knowledge

A reputable German media outlet (ARD) has reported that a diplomat affiliated with the Taliban administration has been secretly appointed as the head of Afghanistan’s embassy in Berlin, without the German government’s awareness.
According to the report, this appointment was made without official coordination with German authorities; a move that could raise questions about the legal status of Afghanistan’s political representations in Europe and how the Taliban administration interacts with host countries.
Since the fall of the previous government in 2021, many Afghan diplomatic missions abroad have faced uncertain status. Some former diplomats have continued their work, while in some cases, the Taliban administration has attempted to appoint individuals close to them to these embassies—actions that have consistently faced legal and political challenges.
So far, the Taliban administration has not responded to the ARD report. Their silence regarding such reports in the past has increased ambiguity about how they manage foreign relations and the fate of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions.
