Thousands of Afghan Refugees Return from Iran Amid Rising Conflict

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that following escalating conflicts in some areas of Iran, thousands of Afghan refugees have been forced to return to Afghanistan. The agency reported on Saturday, March 20, that the return process is ongoing, while many of these families have previously experienced displacement.
According to UNHCR, for a significant number of families, the current return represents a repeat cycle of displacement and instability. After years of living in exile, they now face an uncertain future once again.
The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan is currently grappling with multiple simultaneous crises, including economic challenges and shortages of essential services, with limited capacity to receive and support returnees. Meanwhile, the Taliban administration has yet to offer a clear and comprehensive plan for the sustainable reintegration of those returning.
The UNHCR emphasized that returning refugees urgently need humanitarian assistance, shelter, healthcare services, and access to education to rebuild their lives. The agency has called on the international community to increase attention and aid to address the needs of these families.
