Over 4,500 Prisoners Freed by Taliban Administration to Mark Eid al-Fitr

The Supreme Court has announced that, under the orders of the Taliban leadership, 4,596 prisoners across the country have been released from prisons to mark Eid al-Fitr, and the sentences of 4,407 other prisoners have been reduced.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the agency said that the process of release and sentence reduction was implemented based on a specific procedure and in coordination with relevant administrations. However, no further details have been provided regarding the types of crimes committed by these prisoners or the criteria for their selection.
The release of prisoners during religious occasions has a precedent in Afghanistan and has been carried out during different periods. Nonetheless, human rights organizations have consistently emphasized the need for transparency in reviewing cases and respecting the rights of victims.
So far, the Taliban administration has not provided clear information about how it monitors the implementation of this order or ensures that released individuals do not reoffend; a matter that, according to some experts, requires greater accountability and clarification from the responsible authorities.
