Afghanistan’s Ministry of Energy and Water Issues Flood Warning for 25 Provinces

The Taliban’s Ministry of Energy and Water has announced that from Wednesday to Friday, moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by the risk of flash floods will affect parts of the country. This warning includes the Harirud-Murghab river basins, Helmand, the north and Kabul regions, as well as neighboring areas and floodplains.

According to a statement published on the ministry’s official page, rising water levels and the potential for flooding are predicted in the provinces of Ghor, Faryab, Zabul, Uruzgan, Jawzjan, Sar-e Pol, Balkh, Samangan, Panjshir, Parwan, Kabul, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Paktia, Khost, Paktika, Nangarhar, Kunar, Nuristan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Takhar, and Badakhshan. It is noted that other flood-prone areas are also at risk.

The Ministry of Energy and Water has urged residents in these regions to avoid approaching riverbanks during periods of high water levels and flooding. It has also emphasized the importance of promptly informing local authorities if rising water levels or floods are observed in downstream areas, to help prevent potential casualties.

Afghanistan faces the annual risk of flash floods during the rainy season; events that, due to the country’s geographical location and vulnerable infrastructure, can cause significant loss of life and property damage.
