Germany Expresses Doubts Over EU Naval Mission Expansion to Strait of Hormuz

Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Waddafoul has expressed serious doubts about expanding the European Union’s naval mission to the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the previous experience of this mission in the Red Sea shows that such actions do not necessarily lead to increased security.

In an interview with Germany’s ARD network, Waddafoul said the mission launched to assist the passage of commercial ships through the Red Sea was “not effective.” According to him, this experience has led to skepticism regarding the potential success of expanding the mission to the Strait of Hormuz.

Currently, the movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has halted following a military warning from Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s important energy transit routes, and any disruption there could impact global markets.

The United States has called on other countries to cooperate with the proposed mission to reopen this route. However, France has rejected this request, and so far there is no clear consensus among European countries on expanding the mission.
