Israel Establishes New Military Bases Along Jordan Border for First Time in Decades

Hebrew media have reported that the Israeli military has, for the first time in several decades, established multiple military bases along the border between the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Jordan. These bases have been constructed in the buffer zone between the border fence and the Jordan River and, according to Israeli Army Radio, represent an “unusual” move compared to previous years.

According to the report, the responsibility for managing these bases has been assigned to groups of Israeli military personnel. No further details have been released about the exact number of troops deployed or their specific missions, but Hebrew media have emphasized that this move signals a return of active and organized military presence in this border area.

The history of this region dates back to the 1970s when Israel built a security belt by erecting a fence west of the Jordan River. Following the signing of the Wadi Araba Agreement between Israel and Jordan in 1994, most of the active bases in the area were closed and military presence was reduced.

However, the idea of reestablishing a permanent Israeli military presence in the buffer zone has been considered within the country’s military structure in recent years. Reports indicate that construction of the new bases began last year and they have now entered operational use.

Observers say that strengthening military presence in border areas can always have security and political implications—especially in a region where historical sensitivities and prior agreements have played a crucial role in maintaining stability.
