Taliban Foreign Minister Metiqi and Chinese FM Wang Yi Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Tensions in Phone Call

Mawlawi Amir Khan Metiqi, the Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration, held a telephone conversation with Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, to discuss the expansion of relations between Afghanistan and China, regional security, and current developments.

According to released information, Metiqi emphasized what he called the Taliban administration’s “economy-focused foreign policy” and said Afghanistan seeks relations based on trust, mutual respect, and economic cooperation with regional countries. He added that resolving tensions through dialogue and diplomacy is possible.

The Taliban Foreign Minister also conveyed the administration’s viewpoint regarding recent Pakistani military attacks on Afghan territory, stressing that Afghanistan reserves the right to defend its people and territorial integrity but supports a political solution to reduce tensions. This comes amid rising concerns among border area residents due to escalating border tensions in recent months.

On the other side, Wang Yi also emphasized strengthening relations between Kabul and Beijing and stated that military actions are not a solution to problems. China supports dialogue and understanding to resolve regional disputes.

China is one of the few countries that has maintained working relations with the Taliban administration in recent years; however, the Taliban has yet to be recognized by the international community and is attempting to strengthen its political and economic position through regional interactions.
