Nearly Two Million Afghans Return from Iran Amid Looming Unemployment Crisis

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that nearly two million Afghans have returned from Iran to their home country over the past year, a trend that has placed significant pressure on host communities and basic services within Afghanistan.

According to the agency, most returnees cite the lack of stable job opportunities as one of the most serious challenges ahead upon their arrival. Establishing sustainable livelihoods, particularly for women, is a fundamental need emphasized by the newcomers, which the United Nations has prioritized in its programs.

This large-scale return of migrants is occurring while Afghanistan’s economy faces severe restrictions, shrinking job opportunities, and rising poverty. Meanwhile, the Taliban administration’s imposed restrictions on women’s work and social participation have further limited their access to livelihood opportunities, heightening concerns about the future of female-headed households.

Over the past four decades, Afghanistan has hosted one of the largest migrant populations in the region. Now, with the increasing return flow, there is an urgent need for coordinated employment programs, vocational training, and support for small businesses, especially in vulnerable areas, more than ever before.
