Japan Pledges $2 Million in Emergency Aid for Returnee Afghan Migrants

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced that the government of Japan has allocated two million US dollars to provide emergency assistance to Afghan returnees from Iran and Pakistan, as well as vulnerable host communities across Afghanistan.

According to a statement from the agency, more than 2.8 million Afghans returned from neighboring countries in 2025 alone; many arrived in Afghanistan with limited possessions and under difficult conditions.

UNHCR stated that returnees face urgent needs in shelter, food, livelihoods, and protection—needs that are placing added pressure on communities already struggling with a shortage of basic services and facilities.

The project, titled “Provision of Emergency Assistance to Afghan Returnees from Iran and Pakistan Alongside Vulnerable Host Communities in Afghanistan,” will be implemented from March to December 2026 and aims to support 116,310 individuals in return areas.

As the large wave of migrant returns continues, aid organizations emphasize the necessity of effective coordination and transparent planning by the Taliban administration to manage this process and address the fundamental needs of returnees—an issue that, if neglected, could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in several provinces.
