Taliban Condemns US Decision to Label Afghanistan as a State Supporting ‘Wrongful Detention’

The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the recent US decision to place Afghanistan on the list of countries supporting ‘wrongful detention’ as ‘regrettable’ and rejected the designation. This move by Washington comes amid rising concerns over the detention of foreign nationals in Afghanistan.

In a statement issued by the ministry, the Taliban administration asserted that it has not detained any foreign nationals as bargaining chips. According to the statement, some individuals have been arrested on charges of violating applicable laws, and in many cases, they have been released after completing the legal process.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also claimed that over the past year, following mediation by Qatar, ‘goodwill steps’ have been taken regarding a number of American citizens. No further details about these measures were provided.

The ministry added that it wishes for the matter to be resolved through ongoing dialogue and bilateral engagement. However, critics have repeatedly emphasized that the lack of transparency in detention procedures and restricted access to consular services have raised serious human rights concerns and could affect foreign relations and the situation of citizens within the country.
