Taliban Administration Denies US Allegations of Political Detentions

The Taliban administration has denied accusations made by US officials regarding the detention of foreign nationals for political leverage. Abdul Qahar Balkhi, spokesperson for the Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on Tuesday, March 9, that the US State Department’s characterization of the group as a “supporter of illegal detentions” is regrettable.
Balkhi said that some foreign detainees have been released after undergoing what he described as “legal” procedures. The Taliban administration also claimed that, as a goodwill gesture, it released several American citizens over the past year.
The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that talks concerning American prisoners have been conducted with mediation from the Qatari government, resulting in “positive steps.” However, the administration did not provide details about the number of detainees, the review process, or the nature of these steps, raising ongoing concerns among families and international organizations.
This response came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused the Taliban of using terrorist methods to detain foreign nationals and exploit them politically. He emphasized that the group should be labeled as a supporter of illegal detentions and actions.
In recent years, the detention of foreign nationals by the Taliban administration has frequently made headlines and become a central point of tension in its relations with the international community. Human rights organizations have previously called for transparency regarding the detainees’ status and adherence to international legal standards.
