Taliban Officials Assess Damage to Torkham Market Following Recent Attacks
Taliban officials in Nangarhar have announced that, under the orders of Mullah Mohammad Naeem Akhund, the province’s governor, a delegation has been appointed to assess the damage caused by recent attacks on the Torkham market. After conducting a field visit, the delegation evaluated the extent of damage to shops and commercial facilities and shared the information with the central authorities for final decision-making.
According to a statement from the Nangarhar Governor’s office, the delegation was led by Mawlawi Shahid Noorani, the governor’s chief of staff, and included the head of the province’s Information and Culture Department along with several other officials. The members of the delegation held meetings with shop and market owners in Torkham and documented detailed financial losses.
The statement noted that after sharing the information with the center, financial assistance will be provided to those affected; however, the amount of aid and the timeline for payments remain unclear. Some local residents had previously expressed concerns over the lack of effective measures to protect civilian areas during the clashes.
It is reported that in the recent clashes between Pakistani and Afghan forces at the Torkham crossing, civilian facilities and non-combatants suffered the most damage. This incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding the safety of residents and the security of trade areas in border regions.
