Russia Expresses Concern Over ISIS Presence and Security in Afghanistan

Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations stated that despite the Taliban administration’s actions against certain terrorist groups, the presence of ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan remains a significant concern. He noted that the activities of this group, along with the presence of foreign terrorist elements, continue to destabilize the country’s security situation.
Vassily Nebenzia added that external financial sources also play a role in perpetuating insecurity, and Afghanistan still faces serious security threats. According to him, this situation raises concerns not only for the Afghan people but also for the wider region.
The Russian representative also touched upon the issue of narcotics, stating that although the Taliban administration has initiated efforts to eliminate opium poppy cultivation, the production of industrial drugs in Afghanistan has increased. He emphasized that addressing this trend requires cooperation and support from the international community.
Nebenzia further remarked that Moscow is closely monitoring developments related to human rights in Afghanistan, particularly girls’ education and the formation of an inclusive government. This comes amid widespread domestic and international criticism of the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s education and social participation, which remain major obstacles to normalizing the administration’s relations with the global community.
